Site Full sun.
Soil Light and well drained.
Propagation Take 2-3: stem cuttings with a "heel" anytime except winter. Divide roots or layer stems in spring or autumn. Sow in spring.
Growing Thin or transplant to 9-15" apart. In summer, prune frequently. In very clod areas, protect thyme in winter. Can be grown indoors.
Harvesting Pick leaves in summer. They are best while thyme is blooming.
Preserving Dry leaves. Make thyme vinegar and oil.

Decorative
  • Whole plant - Grow shrubs for low hedging and creepers for aromatic carpets.
  • Flower and leaf - Include in summer posies.
  • Culinary
  • Leaf - Mix with parsley and bay in bouquet garni. Add to stocks, marinades, stuffing, sauces and soups, use cautiously as thyme is extra pungent when fresh. Add to chicken, fish, hot vegetables, fruit salads and jams.
  • Household
  • Flower - Thyme is loved by bees. It's honey is esteemed.
  • Leaf - Make a strong decoction for a household disinfectant. Mix essential oil with alcohol, then spray paper and herbarium specimens for mold protection.
  • Cosmetic
  • Leaf - Make a decoction to stimulate circulation; use in baths, facial steams and ointments for spots. Infuse with rosemary as a hair rinse to deter dandruff. Use essential oil as an antiseptic in toothpastes and mouthwashes.
  • Aromatic
  • Leaf - Use in potpourri.
  • Medicinal
  • Leaf - (English and wild thyme) This has the strongest medicinal qualities, although any thyme can be used. Infuse as a tea for a digestive tonic and for hangovers. Sweeten infusion with honey for convulsive coughs, colds, and sore throats. Apply infused thyme oil as a massage for headaches. Used essential oil in an antiseptic air spray.
